TUNING
During a tuning, more than 250 strings are individually checked and adjusted to make them each the exact pitch. Precision is necessary for an instrument with such a wide range of pitches. I do all tuning by ear. It is a skill which I have spent years refining.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE MY PIANO TUNED?
This answer varies depending on many things but the simplest answer is this: If it sounds out of tune, get it tuned. It isn't very enjoyable to play on an out of tune piano so I recommend regular tuning to keep it sounding good for your enjoyment. Just how regularly it needs it can vary. Many factors affect a piano's tuning including the age of the piano and the environment its in. Once I see your piano I can help you gauge what its needs are and can help you keep it sounding good.
CAN I PUT MY PIANO ON AN OUTSIDE WALL?
You may have heard this warning, to not put a piano on an outside wall. This may have been helpful advice at one time when the outside walls of houses were drafty and susceptible to changes in the weather. If your outside walls are insulated and don't feel different than your inside walls, its safe for your piano. A bigger danger is placing a piano over or right beside heating ducts. The intermittent hot air blasts negatively impact the stability of your piano
DO I ALWAYS NEED TO TUNE A PIANO AFTER MOVING IT?
The short answer is no. Changes in the environment affect the wood and the tuning of a piano. Moving a piano across the room generally doesn't constitute a change for it. Moving a piano from a basement to upstairs or from one house to another may affect its tuning. If a piano has been moved to a different environment, it will take time for the wood to adjust. I usually recommend giving a piano a month after a move.
